In August 1989, Chahi was impressed by the flat-color animations that the Amiga version of Dragon’s Lair had and thought that it would be possible to use vector outlines to create a similar effect using much less computer storage. After first attempting to write the graphical routines in C, he turned to assembly language. He wrote a polygon routine for the Motorola 68000 on an Atari ST to test his theory, with much success. Later, he found that he could run the code on the Amiga platform and achieve a frame rate of about 20 frames per second, later recognizing this as “a major turning point in the creation of the game” and the point where he knew the polygon approach would work. He was able to take advantage of the Amiga’s genlock capabilities to create rotoscoped animations with the polygons, using video recordings of himself performing various actions. Though he had tried to use smaller polygons (which Chahi called “pixigons”) to construct the backgrounds for the scenes based on Deluxe Paint artwork, the process of creating them was excruciatingly slow, and he returned to using bitmapped images.
Many reviewers criticized the short length of the game. Chahi, working for 16 hours a day for two months, responded by creating a new level just before the amphitheatre scene, when the alien friend rescues Lester at the end of a long dead-end corridor. Chahi said: “I like this extra level a lot because it reinforces the close relationship between the hero and the alien by developing their mutual aid.” Also added were more dangers and more save points. This ended up being the 1992 DOS version, which was coded by Daniel Morais, and had the exact code wheel protection of the Amiga and ST versions. The Macintosh features higher resolution than the DOS version, but is otherwise identical.

The change from a small hub to what is essentially an open galaxy isn’t the only shakeup here though. Each of the nine Star Wars episodes covered by the Skywalker Saga contains five all-new levels separate from the open world that will be more familiar to LEGO Star Wars fans, but the gameplay inside those levels looks and feels a little different from past entries in the franchise. Characters with blasters now will do combat in the third-person, holding ZL to aim and pressing ZR to shoot, like most modern third-person shooters. Characters who do more one-on-one combat are treated to a new combo system that multiplies the number of studs you receive after combat based on how long you can keep your combo going. There are, of course, more intricacies to the combat depending on the class of the character you are playing, like a Jedi using The Force to throw objects or enemies, or a personal favorite of mine, the Lightsaber throw. These changes to the basic LEGO game formula were hard to get used to at first, but after playing through a few episodes they feel really well done and I was glad to have things feeling a bit more modern. This modern approach helps the core gameplay loop avoid feeling tiring or repetitive, which is a worthwhile tradeoff to losing a bit of that old-school LEGO game charm.
The open world of Star Wars Outlaws will be traversed on foot, atop your speeder, and aboard your ship. One of the most impressive things we’ve seen from Outlaws is the seamless nature in which you’ll be able to move across these three modes of traversal; Kay can go from foot to speeder to space without any cuts to black or obvious loading screens.

After the New York Yankees took the lead in the top of the 10th inning at Dodger Stadium, Freddie Freeman sent the L.A. fans home happy with a walk-off grand slam to win it for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Thirty-six years after a gimpy Kirk Gibson limped to the plate to smack a Game 1 walk-off homer, Freddie Freeman came to the plate on a badly injured right ankle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and belted the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history to send the Dodgers to an electrifying 6-3 victory over the Yankees on Friday night at a sold-out Dodger Stadium.
Nestor Cortes missed his spot with a first pitch fastball and Freeman made him pay. As recently as the NLCS, Freeman was not driving that pitch. His exit velocity was down and he was mostly limited to serving singles in front of outfielders and limping station to station. That home run swing wasn’t there in the NLDS and NLCS. Now it’s back. That’s huge for the Dodgers.
“It’s kind of what the people wanted,” Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts said after L.A. dispatched the Mets in the NL Championship Series. “It’s what we all want. It’s fun. A battle of two good teams, a lot of long flights across the country, but that’s what makes it fun.”
