The Dodgers overcame a five-run deficit in Game 5 of the World Series Wednesday to beat the Yankees 7-6, sealing the 4-1 series win. Freddie Freeman claimed the MVP for his heroics across the five games, including a game-winning grand slam in Game 1 and routine homers.
Officially, Buehler got the save. The Game 3 starter came out of the bullpen in Game 5 to slam the door on the Yankees. Blake Treinen got the game’s most important outs though. He got seven outs spanning the sixth to eighth innings, his longest outing since 2016. Treinen struck out Anthony Rizzo to end the eighth inning with two runners on base.
11:15 p.m. — LOS ANGELES TAKES THE LEAD! Betts has his moment and sac flies to Judge, scoring Edman. Smith advances to third with two outs before Freeman strikes out swinging to end the inning with six outs left for New York to stay alive.
Los Angeles erased a 5-0 deficit thanks to some incredibly sloppy play by the Yankees in the fifth inning, then rallied against New York’s bullpen in the eighth inning to take the lead. If the Yankees were going to get back into Game 5, that was the inning. They had the top of the order up against Treinen in his third inning of work. The Yankees did put traffic on the bases, but Treinen struck out Rizzo, and the Yankees never had another baserunner on the season. Flaherty went 1 ⅓ innings in Game 5. The bullpen then kept the Yankees at bay and gave the offense a chance to get back in the game (and the Yankees to shoot themselves in the foot).
