Bottom of the third inning: Miguel Rojas flied out. Carlos Rodón struck out Shohei Ohtani. Mookie Betts followed with a single to left field for his second hit. Teoscar Hernández then hit a two-run home run into the right-field pavilion to push the Dodgers back into the lead, 3-1.
Yamamoto walked Gleyber Torres to open the contest, and Torres advanced to second on a groundout by Juan Soto to short. Aaron Judge worked a 3-2 count against Yamamoto before he he was able to get Judge to strikeout on a slider just below his knees.
In his first Major League seasons, Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a tendency to get better as a game went along. So, it seemed important that the Yankees get to him early. Instead, they stranded a leadoff walk in the first inning and went their first turn through the order without a hit. Soto homered in the third, and Yamamoto retired the next 11 in a row. The Yankees needed to score early, but they had only one hit through the first eight innings. Their ninth inning was exciting, but it was too little, too late.
Momentum maintained. Yoshinobu Yamamoto saw to that, navigating long at-bats in the first couple innings and limiting traffic. Tommy Edman saw to it, too, slugging a solo homer in the second inning to open the scoring. And then, once Mookie Betts singled off Carlos Rodón with two outs in the third, it felt like the whole building knew what was coming. Teoscar Hernández smoked a go-ahead two-run shot. Then fans chanted “Freddie! Freddie! Freddie!” Freeman, the hero of Game 1, went back-to-back. It felt over at that point. It wasn’t over, as Blake Treinen made clear in the ninth, but it sure felt like it.
Boo! If Rodón wasn’t rattled by Edman taking him deep early, he surely started to unravel in the third inning. The Dodgers lineup is unrelenting. Even after whiffing Shohei Ohtani in that frame, Rodón still had to deal with the heart of the order with two outs. Betts, Hernández, Freeman and Edman all got to him before he recorded that third out. Rodón’s final line: 3 1/3 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts and 3 home runs. That’s spooky season.
