A shockingly economical result, considering how it started, and a brilliant one-hit, one-run outing.

The Dodgers outbid several teams (including the Yankees) to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the three-time reigning MVP in Japan, and it was for moments like this: to shut down one of the highest scoring offenses in baseball in a World Series game. The regular season is important, for sure, but games like Game 2 is why the Dodgers gave Yamamoto a record $325 million contract.
Prior to Game 2, the last time Yamamoto completed six innings in a start was June 7, when he fired seven shutout innings at Yankee Stadium. He struck out seven that night, allowed two hits, and threw his three fastest (and 11 of his 13 fastest) pitches as a Dodger. In two starts against the Yankees in 2024, Yamamoto allowed three hits in 13 ⅓ shutout innings.
The rally ultimately full short, but the Yankees did make things interesting against Blake Treinen in the ninth inning. Soto hit a long single off the wall to begin the inning, Giancarlo Stanton smoked a ball off the third base bag, Jazz Chisholm Jr. stroked an RBI single, and Anthony Rizzo took a pitch to the midsection to load the bases with one out.
Just a total meltdown inning for Carlos Rodón. Two HRs allowed with two outs followed by a double, then he didn’t even pay attention to Edman on second and third was stolen. He escapes the inning on a line drive to left.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the world is presented much as in the series, although information about it was revealed much more slowly. No map of Essos existed at all until the publication of A Storm of Swords in 2000, which featured a map of Slaver’s Bay. A Dance with Dragons added a map of the Free Cities in 2011 (after Season 1 aired). No map of the world beyond Westeros was provided during Season 1 of the TV series, through the HBO Viewer’s Guide or other official supplementary materials. The opening credits only briefly depicted Pentos and Vaes Dothrak in such a way as to make their surrounding geography vague.
As stated in The World of Ice & Fire sourcebook (2014), the Order of Maesters in Westeros, and other learned men across the world, have studied astronomy for centuries, and by observing the movements of stars across the night sky, have determined with relative certainty that their world is a round globe. Isolated tribes or simple farm peasants in Westeros who have no education, of course, might still colloquially believe that the world is flat, but they are mistaken. Apparently, their better knowledge of astronomy is one of the reasons they consider one twelve month period to be “a year”: this is how long it takes for the movement of the stars to reset (as their planet moves around its sun – though it hasn’t been stated if they understand that it isn’t the other way around, with the sun orbiting around the world).
As a GGRM devotée and cartophile, and art director for 30 plus years, my heart leapt with joy when I saw your rendering of Map of the Known World. As a boy, I used to await the National Geo’s with MAPS and spent time with those, giving the magazine but cursory attention. I also spent hours drawing “fake worlds” as my friends called them, often inventing languages & even alphabets to mark them. I swear, as a boy, I dreamt of a map which, in retrospect, looked a lot like Old Valyria (can’t get enough about all things Valyrian). So as you might imagine, I am enthralled by your work. And like many, I hunger to know more about the vast, “new” lands to the east of Qarth. How wonderful it is that the best maps can create as many mysteries as they resolve. Your artistry has captured both Mr. Martin’s mystery & magic. Bravo!

In Game of Thrones, Pentos is where Daenerys and her brother Viserys Targaryen initially take refuge after fleeing Westeros. It’s also where Daenerys is married to Khal Drogo, setting in motion her rise to power. The city’s strategic location on the map makes it a hub for trade, politics, and cultural exchange between Westeros and Essos.
