Whether you love it or hate it, one thing is for sure: Fortnite is the biggest and most popular battle royale played outside of China. This game, released in 2004, is the first in the series to give the player complete control of a character in a 3-dimensional world. The avatar, Cole, must maneuver through stages including a museum in New York City, the beaches of New Zealand, and Machu Picchu. The player fights against Carmen’s robots and spirits to prevent her from stealing an enchanted diamond, the repository of all the knowledge of the nations.
In an early draft named World Quest, to be based upon the World Almanac and Book of Facts, one villain was a “demented and fabulously wealthy former professor” named Professor Estaban Devious. He would steal treasures from small countries and hide them in his Secret Museum. Siefkin’s script featured several villains, one of whom he named Carmen Sandiego. Siefkin adapted Carmen’s name from the Brazilian singer and actress Carmen Miranda, as well as the name of a dog owned by his former roommates in San Francisco, and from the American city of San Diego, California. Project manager Katherine Bird latched onto that name believing it captured something exotic and mysterious. She was described in the original game manual as “An agent, double agent, triple agent, and quadruple agent in so many countries that even she has forgotten which one she’s working for”. Carlston also liked the name as they could design a female character for it, allowing young women to be able to connect with the game, as well as not having to worry about her backstory of why she became a crook. The name also lent well to the title Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego? as it succinctly informed the player of the game’s goal. With this, they fleshed out two organizations: V.I.L.E. – Villains’ International League of Evil – and the ACME Detective Agency – with ACME jokingly considered an initialism for “A Company that Makes Everything”. Some of the villains in V.I.L.E. were designed from other Broderbund employees: Carmen was modeled after Marsha Bell, the company’s manager of marketing services, while the villain “Katherine Drib” was an anagram of Bird’s name. Others were named based on puns, such as “Ken U. Sparadigm” for “can you spare a dime”. The game would now require the player to start as a recruit for ACME, and work their way up by locating the henchmen within V.I.L.E., until finally they were ready to track Carmen. As they worked their way up, they would have less in-game time to find the crook, and the geographic trivia would become harder.
The game is an updated version of the original Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, featuring enhanced graphics, sound effects, and additional control schemes, such as joystick support for computer platforms. You start out as a rookie detective whose job is to track down a crop of thieves stealing the world’s most precious treasures. After each assignment briefing, you’ll be given a deadline to capture the thief that stole the artifact using clues dealing with your knowledge of geography.
The franchise primarily focuses on teaching children geography, but has also branched out into history, mathematics, language arts, and other subjects. An attempt was made to create a series of state-specific games in the 1980s, but the only prototype to be completed was in North Dakota. Beginning in 1988, Carmen Sandiego Days became popular across American public schools. In the 1990s, the franchise extended into three television shows, books and comics, board games, a concert series, two planetarium shows, and two music albums. By 1996, the Carmen Sandiego character and game concept had been licensed to over 20 companies including HarperCollins, University Games, Great American Puzzle Factory, DIC Entertainment, WGBH/WQED, Micro Games of America, Publications International and Troll Associates. Towards the turn of the 21st century, the Carmen Sandiego property passed through a series of five corporate hands: Broderbund (1985–1997), The Learning Company (1998), Mattel (1999), The Gores Group (2000), and Riverdeep (2001–present). Subsequent acquisitions and mergers of Riverdeep (licensed to Encore ) led to the franchise currently being in the possession of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. For the next 15 years, the series would become mostly dormant despite a few licensed games. In 2017, soon after Netflix commissioned an animated show based on the property, HMH hired Brandginuity to reboot Carmen Sandiego through a licensing program built around the show and the franchise as a whole including toys, games, and apparel. HMH Productions, established in 2018, is currently the content incubator, production company, and brand manager for Carmen Sandiego. HMH Productions co-produced the animated Netflix TV series Carmen Sandiego, which ran for four seasons from 2019 to 2021 (including a 2020 interactive special), and is set to produce a live-action film as well.
