How fitting it is, then, that a major shakeup to the LEGO game formula starts with a return to its Star Wars roots. Gone are the hub worlds from previous LEGO Star Wars games, replaced by a large pseudo-open world covering several planets and the immediate spaces in the galaxy outside of them.

Ever since I played Skyrim back in 2011, I’ve always wanted a game like that but Star Wars. I know there’s Knights of the Old Republic (and that’s being remade for next gen), but you’d think they would’ve developed one recently. Jedi Fallen order was really good but it wasn’t quite an open world like Skyrim or Breath of the Wild. Maybe I’ve missed something in the game announcements but I feel like a game like that would be a massive hit.

Massive does deserve praise for the game’s accessibility options, which are so numerous as to be borderline overwhelming (thankfully, they come with some presets). The “difficulty” setting is really just a gameplay preset of dials for elements such as enemy health and combat intensity. Each preset lists off the specific options it changes, so you can use them as starting points and then tweak individual settings. It allows any player to tailor huge aspects of the game to their liking so that the experience is right for them, which should just be an industry norm at this point. The aforementioned QTE for eating snacks can be turned off, for example. And regardless of one’s point of view on the notorious “yellow paint” wayfinding markers, there are options to disable them entirely, or to change their color and opacity so that they’re still visible but more understated.

When the new game was first announced, it was said to be in the early stages of development, and it may still be some time before Eclipse arrives. And while it has not yet been confirmed, it seems likely to land on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S when it does.

The other concern here is that Star Wars Outlaws tries to include so many things — stealth, third-person shooting combat, vehicle racing, space combat, arcade-y minigames — that it can’t devote the necessary time to making any of them feel robust and complete. Exploring the open world made me wish I was playing Breath of the Wild or Skyrim. Every time I had to do combat, I wished I was playing Mass Effect instead. It’s not that the gameplay here is poorly designed, but that it’s very surface level.

Even though many of the lines from the movie come straight from the books, they don’t always show up where you expect. Both the comic and the movie start out as a “slice of life” affair, which is disrupted during the Battle of the Bands when Matthew Patel crashes through the ceiling and challenges Scott to a fight. I’m on stage 2, and the difficulty has gone right up. I don’t know what I’m doing normally, what with a lack of tutorial that I can see, and I’m usually swarmed with enemies with high HP that constantly put me in hitstun. In the rare chance I actually get to Lucas, I usually die in his boss battle (Once he starts flashing orange, whatever that means.) Bringing me right back to the beginning, and having to do everything all over again really turns off the experience. The game was already tricky, but now it’s getting absurd. Slay the Princess was one of our favorite games when it first came out in 2023, but this new edition improves on its excellence. With a mix of visual novel gameplay, plot twists, and disturbing art, The Pristine Cut enhances the game on multiple levels.

One need only look at the many, many versions of Street Fighter 2 that exist to understand how important it was for both its franchise and for video games. As one of the best Street Fighter games ever made, it’s also one of the greatest of all-time in any genre. It’s widely credited as one of the most influential fighting games ever released, launching the genre to new heights in the 1990s while also helping establish a keener eye for balance among characters that helped kickstart fighting game competitions being more hotly pursued by soon-to-be professionals.

As we donned Samus’ suit and explored strange planets, aggressive alien lifeforms could now get right in our faces, forcing us to dodge, strafe, and roll (in morph ball form, naturally) using all three dimensions. No longer would we sit back and watch as Samus dipped her toe into a pool of lava; in first-person, as molten fire spread over our visor, we’d really feel the pressure to find that Varia Suit upgrade. And perhaps most importantly, from behind Samus’ visor, we gained the ability to scan our enemies and environment, collecting and translating logs from the long-dead Chozo aliens who once inhabited these now-hostile places.

Few games from 2002 hold up as well as Metroid Prime, and the remastered version of the game — which was surprise-dropped during February’s Nintendo Direct — proves that Samus Aran’s first-person adventure is still worth experiencing, whether it’s for the first time or (in my case) the fourth.

Considering the levels are essentially straight lines, there’s a brilliant amount of creativity in these too. Literally everything is a weapon, from a basketball to a mic stand to your own teammate. Since you can revive your partner at zero health without costing them a life, there’s a popular tactic for Knives and Ramona where, if either is ever on single digit health, the other picks them up and hurls them at enemies, clearing a path for easy revival while also dealing serious damage to everyone else.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game – Complete Edition is an enjoyable throwback to beat ’em up games and having access to the game with all the DLC after its several year hiatus is a welcome return.

IGN praised the game’s style and soundtrack but criticizing its lack of online multiplayer or drop-in play. They later named it the 25th best game on Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. Similarly, 1UP.com criticized the PS3 version’s difficulty and need for grinding. Joystiq said of the same console version that “they couldn’t recommend it any higher, especially at 10 bucks.” Game Informer called the same console version “the best modern brawler since Castle Crashers.”

A once in a generation game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild redefined what open-world games could be when it launched on Switch and Wii U in 2017. Nintendo had never made an open-world game before Machine learning for beginners basic concepts, tasks and scope. Somehow, the iconic studio outmatched all of its competitors. Breath of the Wild captured the indescribable magic of the series while significantly altering the formula. It’s a feat that’s truly astonishing to think about.

In just the year and change since its release Elden Ring’s reputation has only grown, which is insane to even think about considering that its reputation right when it came out was “one of the best-reviewed games of all time.” It’s all deserved praise, because Elden Ring truly is a monumental achievement in the open-world and soulslike genres.

If you’ve read any of my reviews or essays on Polygon, then you know I prefer strategy games that can get out of their own way. More precisely, I love when strategy developers can put their pens down, throw their hands up, and admit that the stories unfolding in the player’s head will almost always be more powerful than anything they could write. Fire Emblem Engage is one of the foremost proponents of this idea. It hurls an excess of characters, weapons, battle scenarios, and stat-boosting abilities at you, leaving the door open for you to observe character interactions on the battlefield and create the resulting fanfiction in your head. Its actual script is a quagmire of nonsensical JRPG tropes, and each cutscene is more skippable than the next. But if you’re looking for an excellent turn-based tactics game that gets out of the player’s way, you can do a whole lot worse than Fire Emblem Engage. —M. Mahardy

In this game, there are many ways to earn XP. Constructing buildings is the most straightforward path to leveling up. Upon the completion of any building or decoration, you receive a small amount of XP that contributes towards your leveling process. If you find that need to level up quickly, and don’t mind investing some coins for the cause, you could construct a bunch of stuff for the sweet XP boost, and immediately resell them to get back half your money. Sure, it might not be the most cost-efficient solution, but it’s a great way to level up on your downtime if you have the extra money lying around.

The Japanese right-hander gave the Dodgers a dominant five innings in their Game 5 win over the Padres in the NLDS and was solid in his lone start against the Mets in NLCS Game 4. In his first World Series start, Yamamoto will now face a Yankees team that he dominated back in June at Yankee Stadium.

It’s the action on the field that keeps us glued to the TV, but you have to recognize how the backdrop of a playoff baseball game, the nervous fans packed together, mostly standing, adds to the tension, particularly when it’s tied in the later innings. TV producers and camera operators love this drama, but even without the cutaways and close-ups, you find yourself watching the fans watching the game, envious of their nerves and the communal energy that fills the stadium in big games.

Game 1 was a beauty of a ballgame between two resilient teams with contrasting styles. Ultimately, the Rangers’ thump outsized the D-backs’ small ball. But the stands are clean, the day is fresh, and we’ll see what Game 2 brings.

Aaron Boone countered with right-handed pinch-hitter Jose Trevino, New York’s backup catcher. Although Trevino represented a somewhat better matchup than Wells (.526 OPS vs. LHP), Trevino was not exactly a force off the bench. His OPS against left-handed pitching this season was .626, and Vesia handles right-handed batters nearly as well as lefties.
