I’ve made comments in other reviews about downloadable games like Penny Arcade and Strong Bad in that these games capture the very essence and love of what it is to be a video game. It’s the action on the field that keeps us glued to the TV, but you have to recognize how the backdrop of a playoff baseball game, the nervous fans packed together, mostly standing, adds to the tension, particularly when it’s tied in the later innings. TV producers and camera operators love this drama, but even without the cutaways and close-ups, you find yourself watching the fans watching the game, envious of their nerves and the communal energy that fills the stadium in big games.

The games and series blur together but any conversation you have about this postseason boils down to: “This has been pretty fun, huh?” As a reporter, if you’re not covering this series, it’s easy to settle into a baseball evangelist role, sending slackjawed tweets and starting IRL conversations with “Did you know …” factoids straight out of a Jayson Stark column.
