The Arizona Diamondbacks began play in 1998, along with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, as the youngest expansion team in Major League Baseball (MLB). After a mediocre debut season, the Diamondbacks finished the following year first in the National League (NL) West with a 100–62 record, but lost to the New York Mets in the National League Division series. With several All-Star players like Randy Johnson and Matt Williams, the Diamondbacks had high expectations for the 2000 season, but finished third in the NL West with an 85–77 record. During the offseason, team manager Buck Showalter was fired, and replaced by sportscaster Bob Brenly. The Diamondbacks acquired several notable free agent players during the offseason, including Miguel Batista, Mark Grace, and Reggie Sanders. Most of the Diamondbacks players were above the age of 30, and had already played on a number of teams prior to the 2001 season. In fact, the Diamondbacks starting lineup for the World Series did not include a player under the age of 31, making them the oldest team by player age in World Series history. With several players nearing the age of retirement, Luis Gonzalez noted that the overall team mentality was “there’s too many good guys in here to let this opportunity slip away”.
In order to even the series at two games apiece, the Yankees then needed to solve Schilling, pitching on short rest in Game 4. He and Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez each allowed just one run — Schilling on three hits in seven innings, and Hernandez on four hits in 6 1/3 — before handing it over to the bullpens. Brenly went with closer Byung-Hyun Kim for an extended stint, while New York’s Mike Stanton gave up two runs in one inning of work.
Their roster was filled with veterans.4 T.J. Quinn of the New York Daily News wrote of the Diamondbacks, “Unlike the Yankees, who have turned the World Series into a second home, most Diamondbacks know this could be their only chance.”5 “This is what you wait your whole life for, since you first stepped into Little League,” said first baseman Mark Grace, who had signed with Arizona in December 2000 after 13 seasons with the Chicago Cubs.6
But this was the bottom of the ninth with the World Series on the line. You couldn’t count on a double play, even though Rivera’s nasty cut fastball induces a lot of grounders (he had a 2-to-1 groundball/flyball ratio this year). The infield was in. The outfield was in.
Countries of the world game
The World Games are an international multi-sport event comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games. They are usually held every four years, one year after a Summer Olympic Games, over the course of 11 days. The World Games are governed by the International World Games Association, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.
The World Games differs from other multi-sport events, such as the Olympic Games, in that host cities are not required to construct new venues or facilities for the Games. : 9 The competitors are selected by the sports’ international federations, as opposed to by National Olympic Committees or national governing bodies. In most disciplines, qualification is by a top ranking at the world championships or a qualification tournament. This is intended to ensure the top athletes in a sport compete at the Games.
In addition to official and invitational sports, other sports have been presented during The World Games, including through “The World Games Garden”. Among such sports are: Rhönrad (Wheel Gymnastics), Karlsruhe-based Ring Tennis, Skateboard, Baton twirling and others.
Sports which have been contested at all editions of The World Games are bowling, finswimming, trampoline and tumbling disciplines of gymnastics, karate, powerlifting, roller sports, tug of war and water skiing. Bowling and water skiing are not on the program of the 2025 World Games.

As they watched Game 4, which aired at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning in Japan, Yasuo Sakamoto, 74, and his wife Keiko, 70, wore the Dodgers jerseys and hats they got when they visited Los Angeles this summer to see Ohtani play.
