Crystal EchoHawk, executive director and founder of IllumiNative, said the “Tomahawk chop” is both “racist” and “dehumanizing” for Native people and that the team needs to remove it. EchoHawk said the imagery used by the Braves and other sports teams has created toxic and harmful stereotypes of Native Americans. Betts brought Ohtani home with a sacrifice fly to knot the game up 2-2. The Yankees are a sloppy and undisciplined team, have been all season, and three times they gave the Dodgers an extra 90 feet in Game 1. Twice it burned them and cost them runs. The Yankees opened the door with poor defense and the Dodgers walked through. Credit to them for taking advantage.

Though they didn’t capitalize on opportunities to turn it into a blowout and the Yankees got some late life from Alex Verdugo’s two-run homer off Michael Kopech in the ninth, the Dodgers were in control early and often and are now just a win away from their second World Series title in five years and their first in a full season since 1988.

After his 80th pitch, in the sixth inning, Yamamoto spun off the mound, clenched his fists and roared. He had just snuck a splitter past the bat of Aaron Judge for an inning-ending strikeout. Judge strode back to the Yankees dugout, shaking his head.

For a guy who hadn’t exceeded 79 pitches in an outing since June, it seemed a short start was in the offing. But once the Dodgers jumped ahead Yamamoto started to really cook. He set down the Yankees in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Dave Roberts even sent him out for the seventh, and Yamamoto got Giancarlo Stanton to pop out with his 86th and final pitch of the night. A shockingly economical result, considering how it started, and a brilliant one-hit, one-run outing.

Granted, this was also a good night for the Dodgers offense, especially early. Pouncing on Yankees starter Carlos Rodón, Freeman homered again. Teoscar Hernández went deep. Mookie Betts and Tommy Edman stayed hot. But a relatively close game never actually felt close until the very end, and that was because of Yamamoto.
