Basketball doesn’t really have an analog for this, but the other major team sports all do. Within any game, there will be strongest and weakest stretches for you, and that’s fine; it’s unavoidable. The quality of your opponent determines your margin for error, though, and if your worst stretch is a little too sloppy and your opponent is really good, the rest of it might not matter. Football games can slip irretrievably away because of one bad turnover that the opponent turns into points. Even more akin to baseball is soccer, where the scoring baseline is low enough that a lapse of just a few minutes can render 85 minutes of hard fight and sound plans meaningless.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is making a pitching change. Jake Cousins has taken over for Carlos Rodón after Rodón surrendered six hits and four runs over 3.1 innings of work.
The play Ohtani was injured was just kind of a freak thing. The man stole 59 bases this season and he played in all 162 games and every playoff game. As it is, he probably dislocated his shoulder but I believe it’s been popped back into place and that he will be right back in the lineup tonight for the Dodgers. I could be wrong, but he hasn’t been ruled out for sure. It would be interesting to see Ohtani in batting practice to see how he’s swinging.
While the Dodgers will now take a crucial 2-0 advantage to New York, they might do it with far less star power. NL MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani, who became the first player in baseball history to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season, left the game in the seventh inning after suffering a left shoulder injury on a stolen base attempt.

Ohtani was activated from the injured list as a hitter on July 2 and on August 3, hit two home runs against the Cleveland Indians, marking his first career multiple-home run game and his first two home runs in a road game. After not pitching for 11 weeks, Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced that Ohtani would start the game against the Houston Astros on September 2. However, hampered by a tight back and sore finger he only lasted 2+1⁄3 innings in the game.
The Angels avoided arbitration with Ohtani on October 1, signing him to a one-year deal worth $30 million for the 2023 season. At $30 million, the deal set a new record for a player in his third year of arbitration, surpassing the $27 million Mookie Betts received before the 2020 season, and also gave Ohtani the biggest salary raise of any arbitration-eligible player until (Juan Soto broke it with $30.1 million); a $24.5 million raise from his 2022 salary of $5.5 million and $3 million of 2021.

He adjusted his diet, threw bullpen sessions earlier than usual and took batting practice against live pitching, an offseason first for him. He also embraced data and technology to optimize his training and recovery and also tinkered with a changeup. Furthermore, in spring training, the Angels and Ohtani agreed to allow him to play without limitations or restrictions and drop the “Ohtani Rules”, a plan the Angels mirrored from Ohtani’s schedule in Japan and had implemented since his 2018 rookie season that restricted his usage to a schedule of pitching once a week and hitting only three to four times between starts.

Jack Chesbro, Jesse Tannehill, Willie Keeler and Sam Crawford had already defected to the junior circuit since the end of the 1902 season, and AL owners were closing in on signing Christy Mathewson, Tommy Leach, Vic Willis and Sam Mertes, among others. To stop the bleeding, the NL decided to put the emergency brakes on the feud and meet with Johnson.
