The earthquake caused substantial property and economic damage in the Bay Area and killed 63 people. In an 18-year span from 1947 to 1964, except for 1948 and 1959, the World Series was played in New York City, featuring at least one of the three teams located in New York at the time. The Dodgers and Giants moved to California after the 1957 season, leaving the Yankees as the lone team in the city until the Mets were enfranchised in 1962. In 1947, 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1956, both teams in the World Series were from New York, with the Yankees playing against either the Dodgers or Giants.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from clinching their second World Series in five years, after a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees in the Bronx gave them a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th, the stage was set for Freeman, who came into this World Series struggling to find his swing, a challenge as he dealt with constant swelling in the ankle. After a flyout by Shohei Ohtani and an intentional walk to Mookie Betts, Freeman was set to face the Yankees’ crafty left-hander Nestor Cortes with his team down one run.
Ohtani is the headline act for the Dodgers, hitting for power and becoming the first player in major league history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. He’s hardly alone, though. Mookie Betts is a former MVP and World Series champion who is a terror at the plate, while hobbled first baseman Freddie Freeman is another former MVP who won a World Series while with the Atlanta Braves. There’s also an outstanding supporting cast and a bullpen that stepped up to spell the starters in the playoffs.
“We started this year winning four games in a row,” veteran first baseman Anthony Rizzo said before Game 4. “We know we’re very capable of winning four games in a row. So hopefully we can end this year winning four games in a row. That’s what we have to do to be champions.”
On August 3, Ohtani joined the 30–30 club—30 home runs and 30 steals in a season—in his 108th game, becoming the third-fastest player in Major League history to do so. On August 23, Ohtani stole second base in the fourth inning and hit his first career walk-off home run: a grand slam off Colin Poche of the Tampa Bay Rays. His performance made him the fastest player to join the 40–40 club, accomplishing the feat in his 126th game of the season, beating Alfonso Soriano’s 2006 record by 21 games.
Ohtani ended his first major league season with a batting average of .285, a .361 on-base-percentage, 22 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. In 10 starts on the mound, he notched a 4–2 record with a 3.31 ERA, 1.16 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP), and 63 strikeouts. His .564 slugging percentage ranked seventh overall among MLB players with at least 350 plate appearances for this season. He became the second-fastest Angels rookie to reach 20 home runs, and he joined Babe Ruth as the only MLB players with 10 pitching appearances and 20 homers in a season. He also won the American League Rookie of the Month award twice; in April and in September.

For more than 75 years, Little League® has partnered with major corporations on a national level to help keep the costs for our local Little Leagues to a minimum and to provide unparalleled benefits and resources to those member leagues.
The state champions (as well as the Northern California, Southern California, Texas East, Texas West, and District of Columbia teams) compete in one of ten different regional tournaments (increasing from 8 in 2022). Each regional tournament winner then advances to the Little League World Series. A comprehensive breakdown of current and historical US regional tournament locations, participants and results is available online. Since the geographical boundaries of the District of Columbia are exactly the same as the capital city of Washington, this District is usually identified specifically as “Washington, DC.”
In 2011, pools were eliminated, with the eight U.S. teams continuing to compete in one bracket and the eight international teams in another bracket. The tournament is double-elimination until the U.S. championship and international championship games, which remain single-elimination, with those winners advancing to the World Championship game. Each team in the tournament still played a minimum of three games, via consolation games as noted above.
From there teams will keep going in the winners bracket or move to the elimination bracket to try and avoid being sent home. Games will basically continue to be played at 1pm / 3pm / 5pm and 7pm every day from Thursday, August 14 to Wednesday, August 21 on ESPN. The only exception being Sunday, August 18. Game 1 featured starting pitchers Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers and Gerrit Cole for the Yankees. Country singer Brad Paisley performed “The Star-Spangled Banner”. In tribute to Fernando Valenzuela, his former Dodger teammates Orel Hershiser and Steve Yeager placed a ball on the blue No. 34 painted on the pitcher’s mound instead of throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.
In the top of the ninth, Michael Kopech was sent in by Roberts to close out the ninth inning. He got the first two batters he faced to ground out but then gave up a hit to Torres that was caught at the wall by a fan. Instead of a home run, he was awarded second base on a fan interference call, and the game remained tied at 2–2. After a review, the call was upheld. After intentionally walking Juan Soto, Kopech was removed from the game and replaced by Blake Treinen, who got Aaron Judge to pop out, ending the inning. Yankees closer Luke Weaver pitched a perfect inning in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Treinen gave up a one-out single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. who then stole second base. Anthony Rizzo was intentionally walked, and Chisholm Jr. stole third. The next batter, Anthony Volpe, hit an RBI force-out that was bobbled by Tommy Edman, allowing Chisholm Jr. to score the go-ahead run, giving the Yankees a 3–2 lead.
