World hard game
Picture the romance and humor of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, combined with the high-stakes tactical battles of XCOM 2 — that’s what Midnight Suns becomes in its mid-game and endgame costco mattress prices. It’s a card-based strategy game, and each hero has their own customizable deck. I started off favoring Captain Marvel, Magik, and Blade, simply because their moves and hilarious dialogue kept me entertained, but I soon realized that every single character has something exciting or unexpected to bring to the battlefront. Over 100 hours later, I’ve leveled up every single character and played all the main story missions and an unknowable number of optional missions, and I’m still not sick of this combat… or the kooky cast of characters that grows all the time (shoutout to the Deadpool DLC).
Inspired by the likes of Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, Stellar Blade is an ambitious action game with a few rough spots. If you can overlook them, there’s plenty of fun to have here thanks to the fun Souls-like combat, challenging enemies, and impressive graphics.
Few games had more of a buildup prior to their release than Halo 2, and even fewer managed to live up to them in the way that Halo 2 did. Master Chief taking the fight with the Covenant to Earth was epic, action-packed, and visually stunning on the original Xbox. Sure, the campaign didn’t so much end as much as stopped, but the shocking reveal of the playable Arbiter and his story that mirrored the Chief’s was a twist no one saw coming. Furthermore, and perhaps even more importantly, Halo 2 was the killer app for Xbox Live. It brought the party system and matchmaking hopper concept to consoles, instantly making every other online console game look archaic in its infrastructure by comparison. Learning how to solve the particular puzzles in each level, while learning new concepts and mechanics to apply to future levels, gives the game a steady progression where each test chamber feels difficult but not overly so. The solutions require critical thinking from players, yet provide such an incredible sense of satisfaction once successful. Combined with an engaging story of scientific testing, robots, and companion cubes, Portal 2 remains a heavily played title.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was co-developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Chengdu. The game’s art direction and animation was headed by Paul Robertson, whom the company contacted by e-mail. Robertson had previous experience working on the 5th Cell series Drawn to Life and created Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006, an animated side-scroller game based film. Robertson was responsible for designing and animating the game’s sprites, effects, and other aspects. He felt he had “the most creative control” on any game he has worked on, but that he was still restricted by the source material, pleasing the publishers and producers, and programming limitations.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a retro-style 4-player side-scrolling beat-’em’up loosely based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley. It is a throwback to 8- and 16-bit era beat-’em-ups, particularly River City Ransom, and features art by popular pixel animator Paul Robertson as well as a soundtrack by New York chiptune band Anamanaguchi.

After his heroics in Game 4, Anthony Volpe sat down with Derek Jeter who told him there are kids who want to be just like Volpe when they grow up. The moment was special for the current Yankees shortstop who idolized Jeter as a kid.
