World series game

He’s been there for the highs and lows of one of Major League Baseball’s most storied franchises, capturing photos of players, fans and iconic moments. His photography is on display at Dodger Stadium, which has provided the scenic backdrop of most of his work, including the dramatic first two games of the 2024 World Series casino depot 1$.

That earned them a spot in the best-of-five NL Championship Series, where the Dodgers erased a two-games-to-one deficit by winning twice in frigid Montreal, including a 2-1 Game 5 thriller in which Rick Monday hit a game-winning two-out homer in the ninth inning of what Expos fans still refer to as “Blue Monday.”

Though they didn’t capitalize on opportunities to turn it into a blowout and the Yankees got some late life from Alex Verdugo’s two-run homer off Michael Kopech in the ninth, the Dodgers were in control early and often and are now just a win away from their second World Series title in five years and their first in a full season since 1988.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough task,” Cortes said. “Obviously we’re talking about one of the best hitters in baseball in that lineup. But I think it’s not uncharted territory for me to face lefties and get them out. I think throughout my whole career I’ve done that pretty well.”

“Man,” said manager Dave Roberts after the Dodgers deserted the dugout to greet Freeman at home plate, “it was a great game before that, but the way it finished, I just couldn’t be more excited for our guys.”

There was plenty of drama before the grand slam as well. The Dodgers scored the first run, but the Yankees responded with a titanic homer from Giancarlo Stanton. Both starting pitchers, Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty, had good starts, but Flaherty came out in line for the loss.

Alek Thomas doubles and then Evan Longoria hits one hard to third base. It got through Josh Jung, which was pretty surprising. It was ruled a single. Regardless, the D-backs got some insurance and Jordan Montgomery is done.

Jeremy Peña and Yordan Álvarez followed with RBI doubles and, quickly the Astros went up, 2-0 in the first three batters Wheeler faced and the first four pitches he threw. According to Fox, it was the first time in World Series history a team had started a World Series game with three straight extra-base hits.

Hernández and Freeman are the second set of Dodgers to hit back-to-back homers in the World Series, joining Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager in Game 5 in 1981. That, of course, came against the Yankees as well. Dating back to 2021, Freeman now has a four-game homer streak in the postseason. Only George Springer (five games from 2017-19) has a longer streak.

None get as boisterous – not necessarily loud, but boisterous – as Philly. Those people take these games personally. Yes, these Astros are used to being booed, but Philadelphia can take it up a notch. Or 12.

Saturday was the 12th postseason game and 11th postseason start of Framber Valdez’s career. His previous high in postseason pitches was 103 – in his first playoff start on Oct. 6, 2020, a 5-2 win against the Oakland A’s in the American League Division Series.
