His exit velocity was down and he was mostly limited to serving singles in front of outfielders and limping station to station. That home run swing wasn’t there in the NLDS and NLCS. Now it’s back. That’s huge for the Dodgers.
“This last week has been really good for me,” Freeman said after the game. “The first time I ran was when I ran out to give high fives to my teammates when we got introduced. Tried to stave off running as much as I could this week, treated it as much as I could. So I felt pretty good going into today. I don’t feel it right now, so that’s a good thing.”
The Game 1 managing edge went to Rob Thomson in a big way. He masterfully used lefty Jose Alvarado in the fifth and sixth innings to get through the Yordan Alvarez/Alex Bregman/Kyle Tucker trio and then the same move later on with lefty starter Ranger Suarez. Baker left Verlander in too long and arguably chose the wrong reliever in the 10th. This game isn’t on Baker, though. Give credit to the Phillies for doing everything right and coming up with clutch hits and clutch plays at the right time. And there certainly will be a new narrative in development: Verlander, the future Hall of Famer, is now winless in eight career World Series starts (0-6 with a 6.07 ERA). Unless the Phillies sweep, he’ll get another chance in Game 5.

After Rodón got two quick outs, the Dodgers didn’t seem to have much brewing. But then Mookie Betts provided a spark, roping a line-drive single to left in a 3-and-1 count. Hernández caused an eruption two pitches later, ambushing a 1-and-0 fastball for a two-run shot the other way. Then Freeman completed the sudden detonation, following up his walk-off grand slam in Game 1 with another drive to the right-field pavilion off a full-count heater.
