Honorable Mentions: Before we end the list, here are some honorable mentions. Devil May Cry 3 is arguably one of the hardest hack and slashers out there. If you have not tried any game from the same genre, this game will give you solid stress. Along with DMC 3, Sifu and Hollow Knight also deserve a mention.

While gamers are certainly coddled a lot more than they were a decade ago – think The Division literally drawing an on-screen line to funnel you to your next objective – there are still plenty of recent titles willing to treat us like the adults we (think we) are.

Some may be surprised to see Sekiro not included in games listed in the number three spot. The truth is, while Sekiro is also a FromSoftware release, it’s not a ‘Souls’ game. While it shares many similarities with Dark Souls, Elden Ring, etc, this is a hard-as-nails single-player-only adventure. In a Souls game, you can summon allies to help you take down a difficult boss, essentially letting them share the load. However, in Sekiro, players either “git good” or they die trying – many times.

As we donned Samus’ suit and explored strange planets, aggressive alien lifeforms could now get right in our faces, forcing us to dodge, strafe, and roll (in morph ball form, naturally) using all three dimensions. No longer would we sit back and watch as Samus dipped her toe into a pool of lava; in first-person, as molten fire spread over our visor, we’d really feel the pressure to find that Varia Suit upgrade. And perhaps most importantly, from behind Samus’ visor, we gained the ability to scan our enemies and environment, collecting and translating logs from the long-dead Chozo aliens who once inhabited these now-hostile places.

When I was famished for Dungeons and Dragons, Divinity: Original Sin 2 filled that void for me. I’ve since recommended it to all of my real-life D&D parties, and they’ve all come back with the same opinion: This is the best D&D experience you can get from a video game. The built-in story is decidedly plenty and nearly infinitely replayable. The premade characters all have their own special storylines, and the numerous ways things pan out depends on player actions, backstory choices, race, and more. Persona 5 Royal follows protagonist Joker and his gang of students-turned-supernatural-thieves as they attempt to expose the hypocrisy and greed of adults who hold power in society. Manifesting their desires as mythological interpretations of historic figures that can then fight, the game is over-the-top in the most compelling way, dripping with anime aesthetic and style that makes it instantly memorable. A strong social sim backdrop including romance only adds to the amount of things to do (and do well), and one of gaming’s best soundtracks scores an unforgettable journey.

Starfield had so much to prove, it’s easy to lose sight of what it accomplished: top-tier world-building, a fantastically customizable ship builder, and Bethesda’s most engaging combat to date. Galaxy-spanning faction quests give you plenty to do, but it’s the side quests that really make you feel like the captain in something Star Trek adjacent: generation ships and superhero hideouts and colonies of clones. There’s good sci-fi here for those willing to make the journey.

It might look like a cute metroidvania at first glance, but the deeper you venture into Animal Well, the more surreal it becomes as you find yourself driven to reach the end. Created by solo developer Billy Basso, it’s a game of constant surprises as you find yourself driven to explore yet another room in its neon-soaked world.
