Yankees starter Carlos Rodón’s homer problem reared its ugly head again at the worst time. In the second inning, Tommy Edman homered. (Juan Soto answered.) In the third, Rodón struck out Ohtani before running into two-out trouble: Mookie Betts singled, Teoscár Hernández and Freddie Freeman homered back-to-back, and Edman doubled. Rodón was yanked after 3 1/3 innings, having allowed six hits — half of them homers — and four runs.
Jeremy Peña and Yordan Álvarez followed with RBI doubles and, quickly the Astros went up, 2-0 in the first three batters Wheeler faced and the first four pitches he threw. According to Fox, it was the first time in World Series history a team had started a World Series game with three straight extra-base hits.
Game 1 world series

It was reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s stunning homer that lifted Los Angeles over the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series at Dodger Stadium — one of the most famous swings in baseball lore.
The Dodgers didn’t stay out front for long after slugger Giancarlo Stanton — an LA native — batted in right fielder Juan Soto on a two-run homer against his hometown team, pushing the Yankees ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of the 10th, Alex Bregman’s one-out double put the pressure on reliever David Robertson, who then walked Yuli Gurriel with two outs and threw a wild pitch to put both runners in scoring position.
“Just liked the matchup,” Boone said. “The reality is he’s been throwing the ball really well the last few weeks as he’s gotten ready for this. I knew with one out there, it would be tough to double up Shohei if Tim Hill gets him on the ground and then Mookie (Betts) behind him is a tough matchup there. So felt convicted with Nestor in that spot.”
Game 3 world series
Ohtani suffered a left shoulder subluxation in the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 4-2 victory in Game 2 on Saturday night when he slid into second on an unsuccessful steal attempt. The injury looked bad, but Ohtani is officially in the lineup for Game 3.
On paper, the Yankees had the starting pitching advantage coming into the World Series, and not by a little either. The Dodgers have seven — seven! — starters on the MLB injured list and they have a bullpen game lined up for Game 4 because they don’t have a viable fourth starter right now. Three games into the series though, it is advantage Dodgers:
Yankees: Jose Trevino got the start in Game 3 over Austin Wells, who has gone 4-for-41 this postseason and 1-for-8 over the first two World Series games. Rizzo and Volpe flipped spots in the order from Games 1 and 2.
Another run came in the third, when NLCS MVP Tommy Edman drew a walk, advanced to second on an Ohtani groundout and then made a great read on Mookie Betts’ opposite-field single to right to motor home and make it 3-0. The Dodgers could have broken the game open that inning after they loaded the bases and compelled Boone to go to his bullpen by bringing in Mark Leiter Jr. with two outs. But Will Smith grounded out to end the threat.
