Game out of this world

Out of This World combines shooting, platforming, and puzzle-solving elements. The game is divided into stages; some of them are straightforward and can only be accessed one time, while others are connected to each other, constituting a larger environment. Exploration and problem-solving are emphasized. Many levels include challenges not seen in the previous ones. Tasks may involve environmental puzzles, timed sequences, precise jumping, and combat.

Interplay came early in the relationship with a list of demanded changes for the game to “work” for an American audience, and to extend the value for the console gamers. Among the demanded changes were a more elaborate ending, harder difficulty and most severely, a complete replacement of the sound and music by Freitas. Chahi, who had always been a lonesome worker and very protective of his creations, was infuriated with the demands and would send faxes daily vetoing every change that Interplay saw required. The communication became so tense that eventually, Chahi devised a plan where he would put “KEEP THE ORIGINAL MUSIC” on 2 sheets of paper, tape the ends together and create a circle fax that would loop infinitely until there was no more paper in the fax machines at Interplay HQ. When informing Delpine’s lawyer, Anne-Marie Joassim, of his fax terrorism plans, she insisted that she would first call Interplay to clear up the situation. The results of her phone call, the original music was to be kept, but new music be added during the levels. Chahi agreed, and Charles Deenen composed a cinematic score to go along with the action.

During the intro, watch Lester’s hand as he’s using the keypad. It moves forward too much, thus revealing…there is no arm attached to it! Also, at the very beginning of the intro, Lester goes up an elevator. Later on, a lightning hits a metal surface on the ground floor, but Lester is sitting right behind it. How is that possible?

During most of the ’80s, the real hotbed of game development was primarily Japan and the US. The Atari 2600 kickstarted the home console business in the late ’70s and with it, gaming skyrocketed into mainstream and the homes of thousands. With this new popular entertainment device came a lot of both creative and unforgivably bland products by American developers. When the video game market crashed in 1984, it took the Japanese Nintendo to resurrect it with their Famicom\Nintendo Entertainment System console which showcased their technical superiority and vibrant creatively.

The game was influenced by works that Chahi liked at the time. The art and atmosphere were influenced by science fiction books such as Dune, artists such as Michael Whelan, and comic illustrators such as Richard Corben. Manga such as Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball influenced the way it suggests a lot with very little, character blurring effects such as the use of thin lines to suggest fast motion, and charging power attacks influenced by the Kamehameha. The game’s art style and atmosphere also drew influence from science fiction or fantasy art, including artists such as Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson, and Zdzisław Beksiński, as well as the novel Hyperion. The laser blasters were also influenced by Star Wars.

The introductory sequence reveals that you are Lester, a young physics professor who suddenly finds himself in a strange alien world after a lightning bolt struck the gigantic particle accelerator he was experimenting with. This sequence has one of the best use of camera angles I have ever seen in games: you will see various cinematographic touches (e.g. Lester walking toward the camera, which then zooms to his back) that are common to movies but rarely seen on the computer.
