At The Strong National Museum of Play we celebrate the importance of play and publish the latest scholarly research on the subject through our peer-reviewed publication the American Journal of Play https://rich-palms-review.com/. Based on that research here are ten reasons why you should make play a part of your everyday life.

According to Rigby, Immersyve’s complex needs-satisfaction metrics narrow down to three basic categories. The first of these needs is a need for competence – that is a desire to seek out control or to feel mastery over a situation. People like to feel successful, and we like to feel like we’re growing and progressing in our knowledge and accomplishments. This need plays out in real life when people switch careers or return to school because their current job isn’t rewarding or challenging enough. It’s also easy to see how video games make us feel more accomplished. Every time we level up in Final Fantasy or defeat a challenging boss in God of War, games fulfill our desire to feel competent.

I had trained my agility by clicking over and over while watching TV recently, but that post kind of messed up my brain. I was asking myself why am I even playing? Most of the gameplay is not actually that engaging, but it was the constant progression and achievements (level up, finishing quests, getting more money) that was triggering the reward center in my brain and enticing me to play more.

Easily the best theme for back to school getting the classroom established and getting to know each other. Typically I would spends days searching for this material the weeks before school starts and if I ran out of time I would purchase items on TPT. This here is gold for PreK teachers!

Playdough is the perfect way to break the ice and settle students. You could have some playdough for each of the kids to take home, but first they could create and draw their own playdough creation on a sheet of paper. Students can also work on their fine motor skills at the same time! Here are some free templates available at Mrs Learning Bee:

“People Play Dough Mats” are activity sheets designed for children to use with playdough. These mats typically feature outlines or images of people, such as figures or characters, on which children can mold and shape playdough to create different features and accessories.

I can’t believe the solid gold resources that are listed here on one website! This All About Me will be the biggest blessing when I start my next school year. I know my students will enjoy having multiple opportunities to create self-portraits out of different mediums- PlayDoh, paint, construction paper, etc. I’m excited to grab a few new books… but MY favorite resources here are the gross motor activities! I’m looking forward to being able to keep up with my students this year!

Now this activity might be SUPER tricky at first, and that’s okay! The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is exposure and creating an opportunity for critical thinking. One way you can work on this skill is by having your little one use a manipulative to count out the money. Then have them put one manipulative on each friend’s face to see if they have enough money or not enough money. (We used these yellow base ten cubes because they were small enough to fit on each friend’s face.) This is a hands-on way to introduce this difficult skill.

Another great way to practice spelling their names is by using a sensory bin. Place alphabet beads in rice or dried beans and allow students to search for the letters. You can also alter this and create a family sensory bin where you add in family pictures and names (mom, dad, baby, etc) and have them match the words with the photo!

I love how easy these activities are to implement in the Preschool classroom. They are fun, engaging and provide hands on learning for little ones. I have already used several of the ideas in my classroom and they have quickly become favorites.

Skills Discuss different skills and abilities. Make a chart of caring for personal needs: *I can go to the bathroom alone *I can put on my shoes *I can brush my teeth *I can put on my jacket Count how many children can accomplish each task, and record.
