These home computer versions differ significantly in some areas. New sections were added to certain levels, more hazards in the maze air ducts and better enemy placements along with more checkpoints. Between them, the Macintosh version has higher quality graphics than its DOS counterpart.

All these initial ports were overseen by Chahi to ensure no unneeded changes were made to his art. However, when preparing for launch in the US market, Delphine signed the publishing rights to Interplay, an American publisher who at the time had published other science fiction works like Neuromancer and the Star Trek games. It was through the collaboration with Heineman that this deal was struck, and while it enabled Another World to see a much deserved worldwide release, it would be a deal that would prove near catastrophic for Another World and Eric Chahi.

A sequel, Heart of the Alien, which switched the roles of Lester and his alien “Buddy”, was released in 1994 exclusively for the Sega CD. This sequel was developed by Interplay without Chahi’s involvement, though the original game’s composer Jean-François Freitas contributed a CD-quality soundtrack.

The story itself concerns a hapless, adventurous, and athletic young physicist named Lester Knight Chaykin, whose particle accelerator experiment gets zapped by lightning one evening, sending him to a hostile alien world. There, Lester gets captured by an advanced race of huge warlike humanoids, who send him to an underground prison colony. With the help of a fellow prisoner, who becomes his “Buddy,” Lester breaks out. He then spends the rest of the game trying to evade recapture and death at the hands of… everything on the planet.

This game is notable, not only for its dramatic storytelling and early Survival Horror roots, but also for being one of the most Nintendo Hard games to come down the pike since Battletoads. The slightest misstep meant death in any number of horribly unspeakable ways. The console versions of the game — such as the SNES port — were made more difficult than the MS-DOS / Apple Macintosh versions (which themselves were more difficult than the original Amiga version), reportedly to give players “more value for their money.” (Although it may give some players a strong desire to throw their keyboard/joypad at their TV.)

Four versus one – that seems unfair, doesn’t it? Until we consider that the one is a ruthless killer, working at the behest of a malevolent entity of pure evil, and the four are a bunch of scared victims with some iffy generator repair skills. Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer game that stood the test of time.

The box may claim that Overcooked 2 is a co-op game, working together with your other chefs across a variety of restaurants, but you mark my words: a head chef will emerge. Someone will do more shouting than most, and that kind of thing doesn’t get forgotten quickly in social circles.

It’s 1985, the Nintendo Entertainment System has invaded American living rooms, and brothers Mario and Luigi are running rampant through the Mushroom Kingdom. They’re stomping on goombas, de-shelling winged turtles, bashing question mark blocks and lobbing fireballs—like this is totally normal plumber behavior. (Clearly the 1970s drugs worked.) Every Ninja Gaiden game is ridiculously hard and only those who master its mechanics will ever truly love it. The combat requires you to master elaborate finishing moves for each weapon. On top of all that, dying when fighting a boss in Ninja Gaiden 2 sends you back to the start of a level.

On the tougher levels, the screen gets very busy, and that’s with just two players. Adding in two more, plus the handful of extra enemies they’d bring, and it feels like friendly fire is a surefire way to break up the band over ‘musical differences’.

Those of you looking for the next Castle Crashers or Streets of Rage need look no further, as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is a great beat ’em up for your Switch. Bombastic presentation and crunchy combat gameplay make this one enjoyable from start to finish. Though it can feel like it runs a bit short and the difficulty spikes can be rather intense, we’d give this one a strong recommendation to anybody looking for a fun, short game to play in co-op. Let’s just hope it sticks around for longer than four years this time.

This creativity is ever present throughout the game. While the first level just brings some generic Toronto dudes as bad guys, as the game goes on the enemies increase in range. Level 2, on Lucas Lee’s film set, features men in Godzilla costumes, aliens in flying saucers, and Indiana Jones-style closing walls to escape from. The bosses—apart from Lee himself, ironically—swing for the fences too, adding in tons of visual effects and special abilities to make them feel like so much more than just a tough punch sponge, but instead a clearly defined old school videogame boss.

If there was ever going to be a poster child game for the perils of an all-digital future it’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. After releasing alongside the feature film back in 2010, the retro-inspired beat ‘em up essentially disappeared from existence a few years later. It was delisted from digital stores and only those who kept the game installed on their hard drives were able to play it.
