A game cannot be too short if it’s memorable. Portal‘s sterile atmosphere implants itself in our brains precisely because there exist moments of visual clash; the dialogue implants itself in our brains because it rides a change in theme. And the main reason the game works is because it has a brilliant mechanic: the Portal Gun. Another World is a better game than Portal, mostly, because we say so. Because it’s not glib, and offers no reason for no one not to like it. It is honest, humble, noble, and at the same time hugely artistic and expressive. It tells a story, it presents awesome, unforgettable gunfights, and it lingers in the back of the mind for an eternity. It is the closest videogames have yet come to a great film, and we probably shouldn’t ignore it anymore. Every element that causes critics to jump up and down with joy in modern games existed in a perfect, pure form in Another World. Everyone making games — or writing about them, or playing them — should either play it, play it again, or at least think about it. Because, seriously, though we can’t say with a straight face that we “need” more games like this, once we have a whole bunch more of them, we’ll definitely start wondering what we did without them.

In every respect, Out of This World is a masterpiece. The only gripe I have is that you can only save at predetermined points throughout the game, similar to console games. Since the later stages are very difficult and save points are few and far between, this means you will have to replay them over and over until you get it right. Regardless, this is one game you will want to persevere to see the ending. I spent countless hours with the game, gritting my teeth all the way through, but I was sorry to see it end. Also, as a side note, the ending music theme is among the best music I have ever heard in any game, although the ending sequence is disappointingly short.

Pick up the gun and proceed one screen to the right. You will see guards in the halls. The gun is the king in Another World: no living thing survives more than one shot. Landing that one shot is the trick. In your second fight, you will see a guard hold his gun out, and a ball of energy grow at the tip. Eventually, the ball of energy will become a shield roughlythe height of his body. He will then poke his arm out of the shield and fire at you. You can duck his shots. The game is telling you to hold your own Action Button down. Hold it down long enough, and you produce your own shield. Poke your arm out and shoot at his shield. Shoot his shield enough to break it. Or you can hold your trigger until the glowing ball appears, and then let go to fire a massive, shield-destroying shot. With the shield destroyed, fire another quick zap to disintegrate your enemy.

Right after the first gunfight, Lester and his Alien Buddy get on an elevator. You can go down — the right way — or you can go up. If you go up, you will find yourself in a small, dome-shaped room with a window. Walk over and look out the window. We see through Lester’s eyes. The first time you see it, you don’t know what to think.

The SNES version features a theme song — the first time you hear it is in the very beginning of the game, when the black beast starts chasing you. There was also some tinkering with the background images of the last level (involving naked women viewed from the back) and all blood was removed.

The sound design was also an oddity for me, but one I got used to after some time. There are moments of little to no sound besides noises you hear in the environment, with only some brief music cues here and there during the gameplay. That reminded me of the retro Tomb Raiders in a sense, even though this game was a lot more noisy, and sound effects still pack a punch despite the lacking BGM. You’ll definitely hear the predators coming, and if you strike something with a bolt or spear you picked up, the impact sound will leave no room for doubt. Still, for the bits of actual music I did hear during menus or other parts of the game, the compositions are overall quaint, and this is a game where I think forgoing actiony music for the occasional cues and somber tunes was a smart choice.

Of any metroidvania I played, Rain World by far feels to be the most hostile and brutal of them all, solely due to the focus drifting away from the usual combat and upgrade format the genre’s been known for. Yet despite that, I still got an odd satisfaction at poking around and getting more and more of the map uncovered, and making my own path forward until I saw the next shelter and found a good place to stockpile for hibernation. It also really helps to have multiple difficulties available and even an optional set of accessibility toggles to poke around with, which made going back to it now as a Monk way more approachable than my first time as a Survivor all those years ago. This may sound weird, but a good combat system is the first thing I look at when I see an open-world RPG. I can sort of get behind a mediocre story, world, or cast of characters, but if the fighting isn’t satisfying, then I’d rather just play something else.
