Star Wars’ history with video games is decidedly hit and miss, but we’re happy to report that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga undoubtedly in the former category, and if you have any fondness for the films and enjoy talking Lego figures cracking dumb jokes, then you should probably get it played ASAP.

The big problem here is that while the galaxy is full of stuff to do, it didn’t take long before I simply decided I didn’t want to do any of it, because it just didn’t feel particularly engaging or interesting. A major factor in this is that many of the rewards or treasures I did chase ended up being paint jobs for Kay’s speeder, or engine color options for the Trailblazer. I have no issue with cosmetic rewards. However, if I spend an aggravating 30 minutes trying to be a good little space thief who sneaks by Jabba the Hutt’s veritable army of miscellaneous goons, only to discover that inside the shiny treasure chest in his heavily guarded Tatooine basement is a spaceship paint job, well… that’s kind of annoying.

I left my first 15-ish hours with Star Wars Outlaws feeling not fully enthused, but hopeful that the game would turn out to be a good time. The protagonist, Kay Vess, was starting to grow on me as a character. I was enjoying the look and feel of the various Star Wars locations the game goes to.

I’m fascinated by all things tech, but if you were going to leave me on a desert island, I’d probably ask for my Nintendo Switch, a drone, and a pair of noise-cancelling cans to block out the relentless seagull racket. When I’m not on Stuff duty you’ll probably find me subscribing to too many podcasts, playing too many video games, or telling anyone who will listen that Spurs are going to win a trophy this season.

These versions would become the platforms where Another World would achieve its greatest success and acknowledgement, and while both versions are great games and easier to access than the computer versions, neither version should be considered ideal. The Genesis suffers the most setbacks out of the two with a limited color scheme with fewer and brighter colors, which dulls out the blue melancholy tint. The sounds are also of lower quality. The SNES version looks fantastic and has a wonderful sound but trouble arose yet again when going through the approval process which Nintendo enforced. All traces of blood and nudity had to be removed for it to be released and Chahi had no choice but to apply the changes. The nudity in question is a visible cleft on the rear end of the aliens in the bath house near the end of the game. The console versions got a new level. To lengthen the game, a citadel/training camp level was added before the coliseum fight. It is one of the longest stages and adds a lot of content into the game, as Lester must help out his alien friend who is stuck hanging from a curtain after a failed attempt at bouncing up from it. Also new to the game is the inclusion of a prologue text which tells an entry into Lester’s diary. The content of this prologue differs slightly between the versions. The SNES version was ported to Apple IIGS, and this was apparently the only time a SNES was ported directly onto the computer system despite sharing the same W65C816S processor. All these ports were handled by Heineman.

And somewhat surprisingly, considering the nature of the game, the story draws you in. This has always been the dividing line between good and bad games for me, Marathon might not have looked as good as Quake, but it was a lot more fun because of the story. Well OOTW delivers, even in what is a very small game, no mean feat. The BadThe only real problem I have is that the game is really really hard. This wouldn’t be a bad thing on it’s own but the game has no save feature. Instead each of the “areas” have to be played to completion, at which point you’ll get a password to return to the new level you reached.

Out of This World combines shooting, platforming, and puzzle-solving elements. The game is divided into stages; some of them are straightforward and can only be accessed one time, while others are connected to each other, constituting a larger environment. Exploration and problem-solving are emphasized. Many levels include challenges not seen in the previous ones. Tasks may involve environmental puzzles, timed sequences, precise jumping, and combat.

One of the most innovative games in any genre, Out of This World (a.k.a. Another World in Europe) is Eric Chahi’s breakthrough game that masterfully combines action, adventure, and artistic cinematography in ways the PC gaming world has never seen. You will sense that Out of This World is something special right from the start, even before the game proper begins.
