Star Wars’ history with video games is decidedly hit and miss, but we’re happy to report that Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga undoubtedly in the former category, and if you have any fondness for the films and enjoy talking Lego figures cracking dumb jokes, then you should probably get it played ASAP.

The big problem here is that while the galaxy is full of stuff to do, it didn’t take long before I simply decided I didn’t want to do any of it, because it just didn’t feel particularly engaging or interesting. A major factor in this is that many of the rewards or treasures I did chase ended up being paint jobs for Kay’s speeder, or engine color options for the Trailblazer. I have no issue with cosmetic rewards. However, if I spend an aggravating 30 minutes trying to be a good little space thief who sneaks by Jabba the Hutt’s veritable army of miscellaneous goons, only to discover that inside the shiny treasure chest in his heavily guarded Tatooine basement is a spaceship paint job, well… that’s kind of annoying.

I left my first 15-ish hours with Star Wars Outlaws feeling not fully enthused, but hopeful that the game would turn out to be a good time. The protagonist, Kay Vess, was starting to grow on me as a character. I was enjoying the look and feel of the various Star Wars locations the game goes to.

I’m fascinated by all things tech, but if you were going to leave me on a desert island, I’d probably ask for my Nintendo Switch, a drone, and a pair of noise-cancelling cans to block out the relentless seagull racket. In 1992, the game was released on the SNES and Sega Genesis through Interplay. Also new to the game is the inclusion of a prologue text which tells an entry into Lester’s diary. The content of this prologue differs slightly between the versions. The SNES version was ported to Apple IIGS, and this was apparently the only time a SNES was ported directly onto the computer system despite sharing the same W65C816S processor. And somewhat surprisingly, considering the nature of the game, the story draws you in.
